Holly Springs, Mississippi

Holly Springs is one of the cities which are situated in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. As far as the population is concerned it was around 9000 in the 2008 census. It also happens to be the county seat of Marshall County. It is not really too far from the Memphis, Tennessee. Holly Springs is the city where you can find number of well-preserved antebellum homes and other structures it has also a strong tradition of historic preservation.

Holly Springs is one of the sites of Rust College, and I must say that it is among the historically black liberal arts college established in 1866 by the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. There is also one more thing which you can look out for in the holly springs and that is the national forest.

If you do remember the Shiloh war then I do feel that you would not have forgotten the general Ulysses S Grant who was the general of the union army. I must tell you that this famous personality, who with only 25000 soldiers challenged the confederates at the battle of Shiloh and was victorious, is from the Holly Springs. In the same way I do feel that there has been much great personality from this place. One of such personality was father Tim Kavanagh who was also born in the city of the holy springs.

I really feel that you will find this place to be among the best to even spend you holidays. I really feel that it is really a great idea to say about some of the heroes of the united army.

So let’s start with the detail of the General Grant. I must say that he was one of the most powerful generals of the union army. I must say that he was really the hero of the Shiloh war. However as far as we all remember the Shiloh war, I must tell you that it was the most brutal civil war which was fought in entire American history. Many people and in fact the historians do feels that the main reason for the Shiloh war was that General Sydney did not wanted the union army to move forward.

This in fact was the main reason behind the war. But General Grant really took bit by surprise because he never expected such an early. But he was also charged up as soon as the battle started. And all that happened afterwards was really a history. I really feel that what ever he did was really a great example of leadership. You will also be glad to note that he never gave up.

I really feel that the holly spring has really a great history behind and also a great future ahead.

Monroe County, Mississippi

Monroe County is the county which is situated in the state of Mississippi. This county is named after the name of the great president of the US and that is James Monroe.

As far as the U.S. Census Bureau is concerned, the county has a total area of 772 square miles (2,000 km²), of which, 764 square miles (1,979 km²) of it is land and 8 square miles (20 km²) of it (1.02%) is water.

I really feel that the Monroe County has also a lot to do in the historical Shiloh war. You must remember that the Shiloh war was really one of the most deadly civil war of all time. Though no blood shed took place in this region but I must tell you that this was the path which the Union army followed to reach the Tennessee River.

The county seat of the county is the Aberdeen.

I would now like to tell about some of the great sites of the Aberdeen. They are as follows:

1. Aberdeen lake
Aberdeen Lake is the lake in the north east region and I must tell you that it forms a part of the Tennessee- Tombigbee water way. It is quiet close to Aberdeen and it is confiscated by the Aberdeen Lock and Dam.

2. The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway
The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway which is also properly known as the Tenn-Tom is a 234-mile (377 km) artificial waterway and this provides a connecting link between the Tennessee and Tombigbee rivers. The waterway starts at Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River, which then flows southward through northeast Mississippi and west Alabama, and then it finally connects with the established Warrior-Tombigbee navigation system at Demopolis, Alabama.

As a result of the 12 year construction, the waterway and its seventeen public ports and terminals was opened for the commercial traffic in the year 1985 and the month was January. Apart from the original 110,000 acres (445 km2) of land which was acquired for the construction and operation of the project, another 88,000 acres (356 km2) have been purchased and managed by the two state conservation agencies for wildlife habitat preservation and mixed use including hunting and parks.

As far as the elevation change between the two ends of the waterway is concerned, it is equal to 341 feet (104 m), for a drop of 1.46 feet per mile (27.7 cm/km).

3. The Aberdeen Lock and Dam
The Aberdeen Lock and Dam is part of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. It impounds Aberdeen Lake. Aberdeen Lock and Dam are located east of Aberdeen in Monroe County, Mississippi.

These are some of the sites which I must say is really great for visiting at least once.

Natchez Trace Parkway

As far as the Natchez Trace Parkway is concerned a 444 mile or 715 km long parkway, in the form of a limited-access two-lane road, in the southeastern United States. As far as the southern end of the route is concerned it is situated in Natchez, Mississippi, at crossroads with Liberty Road; and as far as the northern end is concerned I must tell you that it is situated in the northeast of Fairview, Tennessee, where the sub urban community of pasquo, Tennessee is located and in fact at an intersection with Tennessee 100. These roads link the cities of Natchez, Mississippi, and Nashville, Tennessee, via Jackson and Tupelo, Mississippi, and Florence in northwestern Alabama.

The construction of the Natchez trace parkway started in the year 1930 and the construction was initiated by the federal government. The final two segments and in fact both  Interstate 55 and Interstate 20 which were situated in Ridgeland and Clinton, Mississippi, respectively; and also those which were located between Liberty Road in the city of Natchez, Mississippi and U.S. Highway 61 near Washington, Mississippi, were opened for the public on May 21, 2005.

The maintenance of this road is in the hands of the National Park Service, and has been designated an All-American Road. You must be asking yourself that was their any hidden reason behind making this road. I really tell you that there was really an idea behind the building of the road. In fact the main purpose of the road was to remember the original route of the Natchez Trace.

This route really follows the old route followed by the American bisons. In other words you can say that the gentle sloping and curving alignment of the route is due to the fact that it follows an ancient salt-lick-to-grazing pasture migratory route of the American Bison and other game, which moved between grazing the pastures of central and western Mississippi and the salt and other mineral surface deposits of the Cumberland Plateau. The route generally passes through upon the tops of the low hills and edges of the watershed dividing from northeast to southwest.

If you really want to see the perfect picture and method of preserving historical route then you are really at right place. I really feel that the federal government in the year 1930 really took a bold step in building this road. They really cone up with one of the best pathway around the country.

Tupelo is the head quarter of the parkway. This parkway also administers two battlefields: Tupelo National Battlefield and Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site. Apart from all this the parkway has the nine district offices. They are as follows

  1. Leipers Fork
  2. Meriwether Lewis
  3. Cherokee
  4. Tupelo
  5. Dancy
  6. Kosciusko
  7. Ridgeland
  8. Port Gibson
  9. Natchez

I do feel that you will definitely find this parkway quiet interesting.

Itta Bena, Mississippi

Itta bena is one of the places which I feel has lots of historical importance. In fact Itta bena is a city in the Mississippi state and the county in which it is situated is the Leflore County.  You must also know that itta bena is a part of the Leflore County. If you do not know much about the Shiloh national park then I must tell you that there is really lot to see and do research as far as the civil war was concerned.

I really feel that I should tell you about the Shiloh war since itta bena are closely attached with it. I must tell you that this happen in the year 1862. General Grant decided to move to the Tennessee River and was waiting at its bank for the arrival of the Buell and they had the plan in their mind. They really decided to attack the confederates the next morning with the combined force. Their troops pass through the Itta Bena as well. Mississippi and the Tennessee were the two rivers between which grant was waiting for the Buell. Itta bena is really quiet near to this place. However general grant was proved to be wrong by the general of the confederates whose name was General Albert Sydney.

Albert Sydney realized the situation and I must tell you that he decided to attack the union army before Buell could join the army of General Grant. He attacked the army with 45000 soldiers and I must tell you that blood shed started but never looked to come to an end.

Actually the Sydney had thought that he would be able to win up till the afternoon. But this was not really the case. I must tell you that he was able to take an edge but never looked like winning. At the end of the day the confederates were really shocked when they heard that their general had died in the war. I must tell you that the confederates were really in no man land now. In the night Buell joined the Grant who was over the moon after hearing that Sydney was dead. On the very next morning they again attacked the confederates and they were quiet easily able to win the battle.

The amount of blood shed that took place was really too much. More than 24000 soldiers from both the sides lost their lives and I must say that this was really a set back for both of them.

The whole region either it is the itta bena or the Shiloh have really been the witness of this deadly war. I really feel that there was really no winner in this battle.

Vicksburg, Mississippi

Vicksburg is a famous city in the warren county which is situated in Mississippi, USA. It is located 234 miles north of the New Orleans and 40 miles west of the Jackson which is the state capital. The population of the city was about 27000 in the year 2008. This has doubled since the year 1900 when the population of this city was around 14000. However it is being witnessed that the Vicksburg population has not varied much since the last 100 years.

Vicksburg is famous for national Military Park. This National Military Park marks the site of the American civil war battle. This battle took place in the Vicksburg between the dates May 18 and July 4th in 1863. The park, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Delta, Louisiana, also remembers the greater Vicksburg Campaign, which headed the battle. The forts which were reconstructed and also the trenches really mark the memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city. As far as this victory and the victory at Port Hudson are concerned, I must say that it had a great impact on the United States supremacy. It really gave the United States control of the Mississippi River.

As far as this park is concerned I must say that this park includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles (32 km) of historic trenches and earthworks, a 16-mile (26 km) tour road, two antebellum homes, 144 emplaced cannons, restored gunboat USS Cairo (sunk on December 12, 1862, on the Yazoo River), and the Grant’s Canal site.

You will definitely be quiet excited to know that the last thing or the Grant’s canal site is concerned was the place where the Union army attempted to build a canal to let their ships bypass Confederate artillery fire. As far as the Cairo, which is also known as the “Hard luck Ironclad,” was the first U.S. ship in the entire history which was sunk by a torpedo/mine. In 1964 it was finally raised. The Illinois State Memorial has 47 steps, one for every day Vicksburg was besieged.

The national military park was established in the year 1899 and ever since then it has really passed many mile stone. It still preserves the remains of the battle of Vicksburg. And this is really great to think and watch.

In 1950 the park allowed the building of the interstate 20 highway. The park was registered as the national register of the historical places in the year 1966 and the date was October 15th.

I do feel that the Vicksburg city is really among the best cities throughout the country. The historical importance of this place is so much that the record number of tourists visits this city every year.

Walking Tour of Savannah, Georgia

Savannah was the state of Georgia’s first city. It was founded in the year 1733 as a refuge for the poor of England and Ireland. Today it stands as a coastal city filled with southern charm and architecture. Savannah pedestrian friendly layout and compact cobblestone streets make this historical and mysterious city easy to explore on foot.

You will definitely love the historical walk through the Savannah. I would like to provide you with some instructions which will help you to really explore the savannah.

They are as follows:

  1. It is really recommended that you should start your walk from the savannah information visitor’s center. From here you will get the map of both the self guided tours and also the guided tours. This is really the place where you will get all the information about the savannah. The visitor center is also the home for the savannah historical museum. The museum presents almost everything related to the savannah since he was being formed in the 18th century.
  2. You can then watch the majestic cathedral of St. John. The French gothic style church was formed in 1799 and is also the mother church for the diocese of savannah. The interior was remodeled in 2006 but it still contains some of the original details such as the original stained glass window, tabernacle, bishop’s chair and the altar.
  3. You should not really forget to see the Telfair museum. The Telfair public art museum is the oldest museum in the south and has been touted as the very important national resource for art, culture and the history. Added n the year 1833 the sculpture garden of the Telfair houses many historical sculptures including the bird girl from the book and the movie midnight in the garden of good and evil.
  4. You should then step to the Jepson center for the arts. Built in the year 2006 the Jepson is the Telfair newest buildings and compromised for travelling exhibits, an African-American art gallery, southern art gallery and the photographic studio.

The museum was founded in 1966 and contains exhibits of ship models, paintings and maritime antiques depicting trade and travel between America and England in the early 18th and 19th centuries.

There are many other things which you can see in the savannah. In fact the savannah is such a historical city that you will found so many museums in the area. Either it is the west Julian Street or the Drayton Street; you will find almost each street to be telling something to you. You will definitely be amazed by the amount of historical knowledge you will get from this place.

Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site

The Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield site makes us remember the battle of Brices cross roads which took place in 1864. This is one of the battles fought between the confederate and the union army. It is really known for its enormous bloodshed and I must tell you that the confederate’s army was headed by the Nathan Bedford. However you should also know that the size of the union army was quiet large but the confederates were some how able to win the battle. And on June 10, 1864 they were able to secure supply lines between Nashville and the Chattanooga, Tennessee.

This site which is present in extreme northern Lee County is known to preserves only a small piece of land which is not more than one acre of the much larger historic battlefield and this extends northward into southwestern Prentiss County. You must know that this was the spot where the Brice family house stood sometimes in the past. It is situated about 6 miles or 10 km west of Baldwyn, Mississippi, on Mississippi Highway 370. This site also attributes a memorial erected soon after the site’s founding in 1929. In addition, on June 11, 2005, a second memorial was devoted to Confederate Capt. John W. Morton, Chief of Artillery, and his battery. You must know that the Brices Cross Roads is the only National Battlefield Site as far as the list of all the sites under United States National Park System is concerned.

The newly built Bethany Presbyterian Church stands on the southeast side of the crossroads and is really very important. When the battle took place in 1864 then this was the congregation’s meeting house and was located further south along the Baldwyn Road. However, the Bethany Cemetery which is adjacent to the Park Service site marks the Civil War which took place here between the union army and the confederates. Most of the area’s earliest settlers who came here at first are buried here. This cemetery also marks the graves of more than 90 Confederate soldiers who were killed in the battle are also located in this cemetery. Thos soldiers who were dead were also buried in the same cemetery but they were later reinterred in Memphis National Cemetery at Memphis, Tennessee.

You must have heard about many battles being fought between the confederates and the union army. I do feel that you can certainly not forget the Shiloh war which was fought just two years before this war. I must tell you that you will not find better description about those battles than this site.

I must really tell you that you will definitely find this site great to pass some free time and also meanwhile improve your history knowledge.

Corinth, Mississippi

Corinth is a city in the Alcon County Mississippi, US.  The population of the city was around 14000 ten years ago. The zip code of the city is 38834 and 38835.corinth was founded in 1853 as a Cross city. It was so called because it served as a juncture between the mobile and the Ohio and also Memphis and the Charleston rail roads. It was the town’s early newspaper editor W.E. Gibson who gave this name which was taken from the city of the Greece which also served as the rail road between the two cities.

Corinth which was located at the juncture of the two rail roads soon became strategically important to the confederacy during the American civil. And you cannot really forget the battle of Shiloh which was fought here in Corinth.

The confederate general P.G.T Beauregard retreated to Corinth when the battle of the Shiloh came to an end which was pursued by the Union Major General Henry W. Halleck. The general abandoned the town when the General Henry W. Halleck approached and meanwhile letting it to fall into the hands of the Union army. Since the Halleck approached so cautiously, digging the entrenchment at every stop for over a month, this action is also called the siege of the Corinth.

The union sent Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans to Corinth as well and concentrated the forces in the city. The second battle of Corinth took place shortly.  It was October 3-4 1862 when the confederate major general Earl Van Dorn attempted to retake the city. The confederates won back the city and were able to capture it but soon were forced to move backward due to union troops attack.

However it would really be a foolish act if we will not talk about the battle of Shiloh. In April 1862 the General grant of the union army marched towards Corinth. He was waiting at the bank of the Tennessee River for Buell to join him with his army. But the general Albert Sydney of the confederates understood the situation and decided to attack the Unions army in the morning. Hence at 6:00 a.m. in the morning they attacked the Unions army. Their main aim was to push the union army towards the swamp of the Tennessee River. Until the afternoons the confederates were winning but they were frustrated as well as they could not finish it off. More than 24000 soldiers from both sides lost their life and I must tell you that the general Albert Sydney also lost his life in the process. The confederates could never recover from this position and they finally lost the battle.

I do feel that you should know that many battles have been fought around Corinth and it is really a fun to read about them.

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah

Bonaventure society is the place where so many Georgians have been buried. The Bonaventure cemetery has really some of the very famous peoples who have been buried here in Bonaventure. The Bonaventure societies really have made a list of some very famous Georgians who have been buried here.

I would like to discuss some of the famous Georgians who have been buried in this park. They are as follows:

1. Aiken Conrad
He was a poet, short story writer and novelist. He was awarded Pulitzer price for poetry in 1929.

2. Anderson, Robert H
He was west point graduate. He served confederacy from 1861 to 1865.  He soon was awarded with post of brigadier general, chief of police of savannah.

3. Arnold Richard D.
He helped to organize the medical association of the Georgia, American medical association, and savannah medical college.

4. Ashmore Otis
He was the superintendent of savannah.

Similarly many more famous personality are being buried at this place and I must say that this makes this park very important and a must visit place.

On March 10, 1846, commodore Josiah Tattnall III who was the final son of the Bonaventure plantation sold the 600 acres land to the peter wiltberger who was a famous businessman in Savannah.

The wiltberger promised to pay $5000 to the Bonaventure.  The sale property excluded the place which was used as a burial place for the Tutnall’s family. After just seven years the Peter wiltberger was buried at the same place.

On June 12, 1868, Major William H. Wiltberger, son of Peter, formed the Evergreen Cemetery Company. The first meeting of the stockholders in the company was held at the Pulaski Hotel, which Peter had opened in 1835. John Stoddard was elected Chairman of the Board, and William Wiltberger was elected President. At this first meeting, the stockholders agreed to negotiate with the Savannah City Council for the city’s assuming care of the cemetery; the city, as reported at the second meeting, declined.

The by law evolved by the group regulated the sale of the lot within the cemetery at the rate of 12.5 cents per square foot. It was decided that the ten percent of the all money will be used for the upkeeps.

Evergreen Cemetery was purchased by the city of Savannah on July 7, 1907, and became Bonaventure Cemetery. The present cemetery encompasses one hundred acres maintained by the Savannah Department of Cemeteries.

I do feel that the Bonaventure is really one of the most important historical places which should also be considered by the tourists to visit this place for at least once. I must say that the Bonaventure cemetery in savannah really presents some historical facts in a great style and you must watch it once.

National Park Foundation Junior Ranger Program Initiatives

The junior ranger program initiatives is one of the steps which the government has taken to assist the national part in strengthening, enhancing, delivering and promoting the junior ranger programming to the visitors with impact which was mostly targeted towards the families and the underserved youth. There are two major initiatives which include the junior ranger challenge grants and the junior ranger ambassador program.

Since the year 2005-2007 the emphasis has been laid to the junior ranger programs in the parks which were lacking them completely. Many of the parks have been found outdated and lacking with the modern amenities. These parks really need a lot of improvement if they have to explain the matter clearly to the families visiting the park about what they are really meant for. Lots of help was being taken from the college going students who have to complete their internship.

I would like to list some of the successes related to the junior ranger program. They are as follows:

  1. In Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, a Junior Ranger Ambassador revised the current Junior Ranger Program to incorporate the O’odham people, their connections with Casa Grande, and the importance of the resource to their culture.
  2. In Pinnacles National Monument, an ambassador translated the new booklet into Spanish and incorporated age appropriate cultural activities to improve outreach with migrant neighbors.
  3. In Saint Croix Island International Historic Site, an ambassador created the park’s first Junior Ranger Program for youth and families to explore the culture of the St. Croix.

I do feel that this were the major success stories related to the idea which prompted the government to take such steps. I really feel that the government was really right. All the students from various colleges who were doing their internship really proved out to be great for helping out the parks authorities. I do feel that they really did some great jobs as I have stated above.

I do feel that the all the parks really needed this because they were not able to achieve what they were really meant for. The students of various colleges who had history as their subjects really studied all this in their books. They were allowed to study them in reality by the government and it really proved out to be great for the parks as well as the students.

The students were able to complete their internship and the parks were able to attract various audiences towards them because now they were able to explain them better what they were really meant for. The students found it very interesting too in learning all the histories and they were paid as well in the process.
