Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah
Bonaventure society is the place where so many Georgians have been buried. The Bonaventure cemetery has really some of the very famous peoples who have been buried here in Bonaventure. The Bonaventure societies really have made a list of some very famous Georgians who have been buried here.
I would like to discuss some of the famous Georgians who have been buried in this park. They are as follows:
1. Aiken Conrad
He was a poet, short story writer and novelist. He was awarded Pulitzer price for poetry in 1929.
2. Anderson, Robert H
He was west point graduate. He served confederacy from 1861 to 1865. He soon was awarded with post of brigadier general, chief of police of savannah.
3. Arnold Richard D.
He helped to organize the medical association of the Georgia, American medical association, and savannah medical college.
4. Ashmore Otis
He was the superintendent of savannah.
Similarly many more famous personality are being buried at this place and I must say that this makes this park very important and a must visit place.
On March 10, 1846, commodore Josiah Tattnall III who was the final son of the Bonaventure plantation sold the 600 acres land to the peter wiltberger who was a famous businessman in Savannah.
The wiltberger promised to pay $5000 to the Bonaventure. The sale property excluded the place which was used as a burial place for the Tutnall’s family. After just seven years the Peter wiltberger was buried at the same place.
On June 12, 1868, Major William H. Wiltberger, son of Peter, formed the Evergreen Cemetery Company. The first meeting of the stockholders in the company was held at the Pulaski Hotel, which Peter had opened in 1835. John Stoddard was elected Chairman of the Board, and William Wiltberger was elected President. At this first meeting, the stockholders agreed to negotiate with the Savannah City Council for the city’s assuming care of the cemetery; the city, as reported at the second meeting, declined.
The by law evolved by the group regulated the sale of the lot within the cemetery at the rate of 12.5 cents per square foot. It was decided that the ten percent of the all money will be used for the upkeeps.
Evergreen Cemetery was purchased by the city of Savannah on July 7, 1907, and became Bonaventure Cemetery. The present cemetery encompasses one hundred acres maintained by the Savannah Department of Cemeteries.
I do feel that the Bonaventure is really one of the most important historical places which should also be considered by the tourists to visit this place for at least once. I must say that the Bonaventure cemetery in savannah really presents some historical facts in a great style and you must watch it once.
