Corinth, Mississippi

Corinth is a city in the Alcon County Mississippi, US.  The population of the city was around 14000 ten years ago. The zip code of the city is 38834 and 38835.corinth was founded in 1853 as a Cross city. It was so called because it served as a juncture between the mobile and the Ohio and also Memphis and the Charleston rail roads. It was the town’s early newspaper editor W.E. Gibson who gave this name which was taken from the city of the Greece which also served as the rail road between the two cities.

Corinth which was located at the juncture of the two rail roads soon became strategically important to the confederacy during the American civil. And you cannot really forget the battle of Shiloh which was fought here in Corinth.

The confederate general P.G.T Beauregard retreated to Corinth when the battle of the Shiloh came to an end which was pursued by the Union Major General Henry W. Halleck. The general abandoned the town when the General Henry W. Halleck approached and meanwhile letting it to fall into the hands of the Union army. Since the Halleck approached so cautiously, digging the entrenchment at every stop for over a month, this action is also called the siege of the Corinth.

The union sent Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans to Corinth as well and concentrated the forces in the city. The second battle of Corinth took place shortly.  It was October 3-4 1862 when the confederate major general Earl Van Dorn attempted to retake the city. The confederates won back the city and were able to capture it but soon were forced to move backward due to union troops attack.

However it would really be a foolish act if we will not talk about the battle of Shiloh. In April 1862 the General grant of the union army marched towards Corinth. He was waiting at the bank of the Tennessee River for Buell to join him with his army. But the general Albert Sydney of the confederates understood the situation and decided to attack the Unions army in the morning. Hence at 6:00 a.m. in the morning they attacked the Unions army. Their main aim was to push the union army towards the swamp of the Tennessee River. Until the afternoons the confederates were winning but they were frustrated as well as they could not finish it off. More than 24000 soldiers from both sides lost their life and I must tell you that the general Albert Sydney also lost his life in the process. The confederates could never recover from this position and they finally lost the battle.

I do feel that you should know that many battles have been fought around Corinth and it is really a fun to read about them.
