How to Get to Shiloh National Military Park

Shiloh national park is situated 110 miles east of the Memphis Tennessee. It is accessible from I-40 via TN 22 south and from Memphis along TN 57 east and TN 22 north. The bitter battle was fought here on April 6 and 7 1862. This really led the way for the general Grant to siege the Vicksburg. Well preserved Indian mounds overlook the river and Shiloh. National cemetery adjoins the park. Besides preserving the site of the battle in Tennessee the park also commemorate the siege, battle and occupation of the rail junction at nearby Corinth, Mississippi.

History
The history of this place is simple and starts with the war being fought here on April 6 and seven. After the request of the farmers the federal government decided to form a national military park here on December 27 1894. It was transferred from the war department on august 10 1933.

Operating hours
The operating hour is from 8:00 a.m. in the morning up till dusk except the Christmas day when it is closed. The peak season starts from April till Labor Day.

Things to do in Shiloh national Military Park

You can view the orientation film and the museum exhibits at the Shiloh battlefield visiting center. You can walk through the national cemetery and the Pittsburg landing on the Tennessee River. Along the 10 mile self guided tour stop at each of its 14 wayside exhibits (the bookstore provides the audio tape tour as well).

Living history events are offered near the battles anniversary and at the weekend of the Memorial Day and also periodically through the summer month. A variety of interpretive rifle firing activities also are organized daily June till mid august. During fall and spring the ranger led programs are available on weekends.

Shiloh national Military Park will host several living events in the year 2009. These park activities will provide visitors a unique look at civilian life in and around Pittsburg in 19th century. Lansing in the 1860’s infantry, artillery, and cavalry tactical demonstration and the demonstration of the soldier life in that period is also shown.
