Vicksburg, Mississippi

Vicksburg is a famous city in the warren county which is situated in Mississippi, USA. It is located 234 miles north of the New Orleans and 40 miles west of the Jackson which is the state capital. The population of the city was about 27000 in the year 2008. This has doubled since the year 1900 when the population of this city was around 14000. However it is being witnessed that the Vicksburg population has not varied much since the last 100 years.

Vicksburg is famous for national Military Park. This National Military Park marks the site of the American civil war battle. This battle took place in the Vicksburg between the dates May 18 and July 4th in 1863. The park, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Delta, Louisiana, also remembers the greater Vicksburg Campaign, which headed the battle. The forts which were reconstructed and also the trenches really mark the memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city. As far as this victory and the victory at Port Hudson are concerned, I must say that it had a great impact on the United States supremacy. It really gave the United States control of the Mississippi River.

As far as this park is concerned I must say that this park includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles (32 km) of historic trenches and earthworks, a 16-mile (26 km) tour road, two antebellum homes, 144 emplaced cannons, restored gunboat USS Cairo (sunk on December 12, 1862, on the Yazoo River), and the Grant’s Canal site.

You will definitely be quiet excited to know that the last thing or the Grant’s canal site is concerned was the place where the Union army attempted to build a canal to let their ships bypass Confederate artillery fire. As far as the Cairo, which is also known as the “Hard luck Ironclad,” was the first U.S. ship in the entire history which was sunk by a torpedo/mine. In 1964 it was finally raised. The Illinois State Memorial has 47 steps, one for every day Vicksburg was besieged.

The national military park was established in the year 1899 and ever since then it has really passed many mile stone. It still preserves the remains of the battle of Vicksburg. And this is really great to think and watch.

In 1950 the park allowed the building of the interstate 20 highway. The park was registered as the national register of the historical places in the year 1966 and the date was October 15th.

I do feel that the Vicksburg city is really among the best cities throughout the country. The historical importance of this place is so much that the record number of tourists visits this city every year.
